“Students learn best when”..

Some answers were when lessons are:

Below are some thoughts and info I picked up on Day Two of the (HSNF) High School New Face conference held at Holiday Valley Resort sponsered by Cattaragus Allegany BOCES July 17-19 2007.

I made some great connections especially attending Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach’s session.

Terminology:

Blogging scholarship- blogging and building on the work of others.

Blog promotion – When speaking about another blogger in your blog, linking to their blog is good netiquette.:)

http://del.icio.us/abpcjohn has a great list of wikis and blogs created in this Alabama school district.

Live Blogger: Someone who blogs about something as it is happening.

Virtual Learning Communities

[slideshare id=79226&doc=vlcs4189&w=425]

Benefit
Teachers are collaborating getting staff development in an unconventional environment customized to Just in Time Learning when they need it.

Teaching with a wiki- Sheryl’s use of wikispaces is great.

Has her course syllabus on it

Students help with it and have a personalized

Had side link with itinerary

Second Life

Educational Bloggers have avatars

Teachers should at least figure out how it works so that they can connec with students.

Ning Community- sharing resources Yak Pak- Use this and record a message to students for vocalizing feedback on assessments
Tapped In-Comunity for Educational Professsionals

Sign in and go to Reception, please will immediately chat with (IM) you and offer assistance.

Enter discussions

Some of the features

Talk- click on and click off to stop talking

Tools-drop into rooms

Showcase time

High School Blog- Darren AP Math teacher from Canada

Students go home tired not the teacher.

Students blog

Has a scribe Hall of Fame- students win badge.

Student winner blog full of detail, color, and images:)

Calculation s on SMART Board

Saves as .ppt

Uploads to Slideshare

Notes and lesson of that day are on the web

Wikis-

A good video explaining wikis in plain English here. Oops there was. Now the link has a 404:(

Easy to create web page

Important buttons Edit and Save.

Save and doc becomes web page

Groups can coordinate easily.

People can create collaborative lists.

People edit and change the lists as they go.

Link creates a new page.

Wikis and ideas

pbwikis

wikispaces

Wet Paint (wiki and web page combined)

Blogs vs Wiki

Blogs have one author. Wikis are collaborative and many can author the same page.

serves two purposes

blog search

watch list

anytime that there is a post for a specific blog post

link to people so that you can rank
either link to the name or blog link
enter your blog and it starts to rank it.

Bloglines

Gaggle

student e-mail

TakingitGlobal

On-line youth community to help change our word.

Wikispaces the quickest way to add pages is to Edit nav bar and type page name and click link and it becomes a page.

Ways to promote and spread your blog:

Technorati

Feedburner

Great session! Here was the agenda by the way:)

I was able to add my blog to a list of edubloggers and bookmark their blogs for some good ideas and philosophies.
One great one I read almost daily is On the Trails by Chris Shively.

Here is a list of some of the session participants and links to their web spots.
