  • Engaging students schema
  • Constructivist theory of learning can now be really implemented. We now have all the web tools to truly do it.
    • Resources are all there on th web and have been created by other teachers
    • Rip Mix Learn – use best minds resources and make lesson plans
    • Students are going to expect more of us

Ways to use Blogs/Wikis/Podcasts

Each content area shared ideas of how to use tools in different ways.

Technology:

  • Reverse mentoring:
    • students help tech-phobic teacher while teacher helps kids with content.

Science

  • podcasts
    • create glossary
    • create instructional video put on own wiki or blog
    • have Wiki Wednesday:
    • write own science articles on blog

    English

    • journal about novels
    • blogs with other districts

    Wikis

    • create a class soundtrack
    • wiki with literary elements with pictorals
    • jigsaw: visit each groups wiki and deepen the response to questions
    • elluminate: meet up with students around globe
    • Second Life create: avatar and create plays
    • Flickr: take picture and create story using six words with capture, work with Art classes and post around school. Create hotspot over picture label and identify picture. Narrate what is going on in picture with hotspots.

    Business Education

    • connect with students in other countries and get take on current events
    • Use wikis to educate teens and community on consumer/credit info
    • Business problem of the day: creative problem solution for a entrepreneurship unit

    Foreign Language:

    • Students created podcasts in that language
    • Students fill in chapter outline together
    • Twitter: language practice
    • elluminate: talk with college students and native speakers

    Physical Education:

    • collaborative fitness portfolio

    Social Studies

    • Blog: Have a simulated dinner conversation between historical figures

    Math

    • collaborative review chapters
    • set up time for students to blog (write and discuss) about math problems

    Below are some thoughts and info I picked up on Day Two of the (HSNF) High School New Face conference held at Holiday Valley Resort sponsered by Cattaragus Allegany BOCES July 17-19 2007.

    I made some great connections especially attending Sheryl Nussbaum-Beach’s session.

    Terminology:

    • Blogging scholarship- blogging and building on the work of others.
    • Blog promotion – When speaking about another blogger in your blog, linking to their blog is good netiquette.:)

    http://del.icio.us/abpcjohn has a great list of wikis and blogs created in this Alabama school district.

    • Live Blogger: Someone who blogs about something as it is happening.

    Virtual Learning Communities

    Benefit
    Teachers are collaborating getting staff development in an unconventional environment customized to Just in Time Learning when they need it.

    Teaching with a wiki- Sheryl’s use of wikispaces is great.

    • Has her course syllabus on it
      • Students help with it and have a personalized
    • Had side link with itinerary

    Second Life

    • Educational Bloggers have avatars
    • Teachers should at least figure out how it works so that they can connec with students.

    Ning Community- sharing resources Yak Pak- Use this and record a message to students for vocalizing feedback on assessments

    • Sign in and go to Reception, please will immediately chat with (IM) you and offer assistance.

    • Students go home tired not the teacher.

    • Saves as .ppt
    • Uploads to Slideshare
    • Notes and lesson of that day are on the web

    Wikis-

    1. Easy to create web page
      1. Important buttons Edit and Save.
      2. Save and doc becomes web page
      3. Groups can coordinate easily.
        1. People can create collaborative lists.
        2. People edit and change the lists as they go.
        3. Link creates a new page.

        Blogs vs Wiki

        1. Blogs have one author. Wikis are collaborative and many can author the same page.

          1. anytime that there is a post for a specific blog post
          2. link to people so that you can rank
            either link to the name or blog link
            enter your blog and it starts to rank it.

        1. Wikispaces the quickest way to add pages is to Edit nav bar and type page name and click link and it becomes a page.

      I was able to add my blog to a list of edubloggers and bookmark their blogs for some good ideas and philosophies.
      One great one I read almost daily is On the Trails by Chris Shively.
